America can and must do a better job of educating kids about effective money management.

Capital One’s recent “Back to School Survey” indicated that: only 43% of parents have discussed prioritizing needs and wants with kids and a surprising 42% of parents have not take any steps whatsoever in discussing any financial basics.

Kids are our business, government and education leaders of tomorrow, and many adults are not prepared to teach kids financial literacy.

Financially literate individuals are more likely to be self-supporting, are able to prepare for financial setbacks and improve their standard of living through wise spending, saving, planning and investing.

Kids need to learn effective money management and become responsible contributors to our communities and to the global economy in the future. Unfortunately only half of the schools in the US require financial literacy education.

One group actively working to address the problem in Clarion County is Junior Achievement of Clarion County.

Junior Achievement (JA) is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating students about work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs. JA’s programs help prepare young people for the real world by showing them how to generate wealth and effectively manage it, how to create jobs which make their communities more robust, and how to apply entrepreneurial thinking to the workplace. Students put these lessons into action, and help strengthen their communities.

JA programs are taught by classroom volunteers recruited from the local business community. In that way, JA helps prepare our future workforce and serves as a bridge between business and education—future partnership.

In Pennsylvania, financial literacy education is a requirement, but additional funding is generally not provided. This is a major reason why schools need to work with organizations, like JA, that can provide relevant financial literacy training. JA needs to continue to develop partnerships with the local business and education community to ensure that every child in our community is given the appropriate tools to be a successful contributor to society.

The success of JA in Clarion County depends on community leaders participating on the local Junior Achievement Leadership Board, volunteering in local classrooms and raising resources for curriculum expenses.
